The Role of a Dietitian in Managing Food and Chemical Allergies.

Living with a chemical allergy can present numerous challenges, affecting both physical health and overall well-being. Managing these allergies requires a careful and informed approach to ensure a safe and healthy lifestyle. A dietitian can guide individuals in making dietary changes to accommodate these needs.

One example of a common chemical allergen is salicylate. Salicylates are naturally occurring chemicals found in many fruits, vegetables, and herbs. They often contribute to the flavour and aroma of food and act as natural pesticides and fungicides. As a result, salicylate levels are higher in the skins of fruits and vegetables, and in smaller or less ripe produce. Levels are lower in peeled fruits and vegetables and decrease with ripening. Salicylates are also synthetically created and can be found in perfumes, scented toiletries, cleaning products, washing powders, botanical oils (e.g., lavender, eucalyptus, and tea tree), and medications (e.g., aspirin).

Most people can tolerate moderate amounts of salicylates in food, medications, and perfumes without adverse effects. However, a small percentage of individuals are sensitive to higher amounts of salicylates. Those with salicylate intolerance may have varying thresholds for how much they can tolerate before symptoms occur. Since the effect of salicylates on the body is progressive, even small amounts can build up over time and trigger reactions. Symptoms may include:

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, abdominal pain
  • Chronic Mouth Ulcers, Reflux, Nausea
  • Skin Irritation: Itchiness, hives, swelling, changes in skin colour
  • Breathing Difficulties: Wheezing, shortness of breath, sinus troubles, asthma
  • Headaches
  • Poor Concentration, Irritability, Moodiness, Anxiety, Behavioural Problems, Hyperactivity
  • Fatigue

How Can a Dietitian Help Manage Food and Chemical Allergies?

Education and Awareness

Dietitians can explain how allergens may be listed on food labels, teach you to recognize potential triggers, and empower you to make informed dietary choices.

Meal Planning and Recipe Modification

Creating delicious and nutritious meals while adhering to allergy restrictions can be challenging. A dietitian can assist with meal planning and provide guidance on modifying recipes to ensure they are safe and enjoyable. This support enhances dietary variety and helps maintain a healthy, allergen-free lifestyle.
